Sankofa Stories presents Fierce Women in History & Fairy Tales:

Storytellers Vicki Lynn Bryan and Shirley Johnson will present stories about two powerful New Jersey historical figures: Jarena Lee and Charity Still:

Jarena Lee, a Cape May native, was the first woman minister authorized to preach under the auspices of the African Methodist Church.

Charity Still was an abolitionist matriarch who twice escaped slavery and fled to New Jersey with her children, one of whom was William Still, who famously coined the term "Underground Railroad."

Ms. Bryan and Ms. Johnson will also perform 2 Twisted Fairy Tales: Clever Monica and The Magic Date Tree. Both stories present a "modern" twist on the depiction of women in fairytales: empowered and independent.
