Program Description

Event Details

The history of Asian Americans, their contributions, oppression, and resistance, has been an integral part of American life. NYU Professor Ying Lu, a board member of Make Us Visible New Jersey and the E Pluribus Unum Project, will shed light on the often-overlooked history of Asian Americans in American discourse. She will also discuss the dangers of erasing this history from American society, particularly in light of increasing anti-Asian hate and racism against Asian Americans that were exacerbated due to the Covid pandemic. Additionally, Professor Lu will examine the problematic stereotype of the "model minority" that has been imposed on Asian Americans, explaining how it perpetuates harmful expectations and assumptions and contributes to the erasure of Asian American experiences.
